What Is a Wellhead, Exactly?

During drilling, the wellhead supports the blowout preventer (BOP) stack. After the well is completed, the BOP is removed and a Christmas tree is bolted to the same wellhead to control production. A wellhead works by transferring casing and tubing loads into the ground and containing pressure at the surface.
